Let me tell you something, hustle culture is overrated.In competitive academic environments people often start bragging about how much they are doing, how little sleep they are getting, how they are trying to juggle so much work at once and how they are constantly stressed as if it is some badge of honour and try to one up the other person on the same.It is important to take time out and take a break, overworking your brain wouldn’t make yo u more successful or more smarter, in fact it is really bad for your mental health! Try a New Activity Once a Month Our schedules can turn us into creatures of habit. We can easily just start going through the motions if we’re not careful to try new things, but this can also make us bored, unhappy, and possibly lose our passion for things we care about such as being active, our jobs, and even our healthy eating habits. My quest for a Higher Power really started when I was little - I craved alone time as the oldest in a family of 4 kids. I got that time with my beloved grandparents when they took me to their place of worship - church - on our high holy days of Easter and Christmas. I have beautiful memories of curling up against my grandmother's fur coat (no judging - it WAS warm and cozy). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Many years went by and in high school my first experience with a 12-step program came into play through my experience in Alanon. In college I broadened that understanding with my first realization that there just HAD to be something MORE out there - something bigger than ME - at work in my life. Here is where my quest - my personal faith journey really began. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For me, when I "let go" of all that I think I am supposed to be - the outside expectations of perfection, others definition of success, the notion that I'm 'not good enough' in ANY role I play (caregiver, support person, mother, sister, daughter, nonprofit founder) - or even that I'm not ENOUGH .. when I actually "let go" I am able to recognize that I DO MATTER .. and MY GOD .. my God loves me just as I am. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ AND s/he loves me so much that s/he won't LEAVE me this way. S/He won't leave me sad or disappointed, feeling like a failure, or broken .. If you live in America, you are among some of the most stressed people in the world. Last year, Americans reported feeling stress, anger, and worry at the highest levels in a decade, according to Gallup’s 2019 Global Emotions report. ⠀⠀⠀ In the United States, about 55% of adults said they had experienced stress during “a lot of the day,” compared with just 35% globally. About 45% of the Americans surveyed said they had felt “a lot” of worry, compared with a global average of 39%. ⠀⠀⠀ Gallup’s research also found that lower-income Americans tended to report more stress. While some stress is normal, chronic stress is connected to a range of conditions, including mental health issues, cognitive changes, and chronic disease. «TWO EMOTIONS» ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today, my yoga teacher mused that she had been considering that there were only two emotions: fear and love. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Anything else was just shades of this experience. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve been meditating on this all day. I was taught that there were at least six different emotions (POP QUIZ! can anyone name all six?!). Fear WAS one of them; but love certainly wasn’t. She went on to offer up a suggestion: we are either operating from fear or operating from love. This is a choice. As humans, our divine gift is love, yet we are so constantly operating from fear. Fear of not being enough, fear of abandonment, fear of failure. These were just a few fears that popped into my head immediately (and certainly fears that hang around, like, all day every day of my friggen life). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Can you begin operate more from a place of love? The reality is that you cannot selectively numb emotions. Using negative behaviors to avoid your feelings may help you experience less sadness and anger, but they also stop you from feeling happiness and joy. . Part of the amazing thing about being human is that we are able to have a range of emotions. Experiencing sadness and hurt is part of what makes it so incredible to feel joy and happiness! . Rather than trying to suppress your feelings, work to be a mindful observer of them. Notice the emotions that you experience, then, try to cultivate a curious and nonjudgmental stance. Our emotions are often messengers which signal something important that we need to pay attention to. . An integral component of being able to cope with emotions is the practice of self-compassion, which is simply treating and responding to yourself the way you would a loved one who was sad or struggling. . You deserve to extend to yourself the same kindness that you would to others that you love. Beating yourself up for feeling sad, anxious, or scared often serves to make you feel even worse. Instead, work to say kind and gentle things to yourself and engage in compassionate acts of self-care. . Of course there are times when it is not always feasible to process your feelings in the moment, which is when you can employ healthy distraction or coping strategies. Gratitude: Day 22 of 40: Running The ability of the human body to run is simply exceptional. The biomechanics and coordination of elite runners is art in motion. While my running mechanics resemble more of a toddler's crayon drawing, I reap the same benefits (minus the medals). Lacing up your shoes, getting outside, feeling freedom and the rhythm of your feet, feeling your heart beating, being present, gasping for air, feeling alive, your brain rewiring, your mood resetting. Never once have I regretted going on a run (well, there was that one time...) And when injury robs you of this gift you come back to it more grateful than before. And while I currently don't run as often or as far as I once did, I enjoy it just as much. And the friends I've made and the stories I tell from running adventures makes me smile, smirk and giggle. I hope you lace up your shoes and get outdoors for a walk, hike or run this week. I’ve been in a real funk the past week, and I wasn’t really sure why, until this morning. I opened up my email to see which book was borrowed from @cmlibrary (on recovery lol) and then had another email download about 13 new bars opening up in Charlotte. It’s not the total sum of the days stories, which include: dating stories, cool open houses, holiday festivities, agenda wrapping paper, and hot chocolate on a stick... but it’s the header. A pretty festive, holiday email, but the headline of the 6:00am news blast, is about the bar scene. I can’t even say I blame them (which is why I didn’t tag them) because I know from personal experience that I spent way more money as a consumer last year on alcohol than I did on any other bright and cheery items. Last week, in moments where I felt totally surrounded by the desire to drink, I would stop... take a breath, and tell myself I’d be home soon. I’m home now, but that didn’t REALLY change anything. All it’s done is show me that there was no real difference between there and here. I fantasized about a place far away from my tropical paradise, longing to put some distance between me and my temptations. That was a foolish use of my vacation time. There is no “safe place” to be in recovery. At any given moment here at home, there are still unlimited options for drinking. I took a video in a Harris Teeter (and posted it) because I saw 5 NA beers in the cooler. I wasn’t really sure why, but I think it was because I got excited to have options. The second photo in this post is from someone I’ve known from pretty early on in my Instagram days. I got that message after maybe two or three posts about my addiction. I never responded. I didn’t know how to. They’ve since unfollowed, which is for the best, because neither of us needed to keep a stressor in our life. I don’t want to talk about that message, and didn’t plan on posting it, but my post today got me thinking about what I put out there to you. If my post bum you out, make you sad, roll your eyes, or just simply bore you... please feel free to block/unfollow. No hard feelings. I’m never sure what mood my posts will take, and I can’t promise anything but honesty.
