The more I think about it the more I can’t understand why PM did the briefing himself. Would have made sense if announcing a suspension/dismissal. Instead he connected himself completely with DC and this episode in the public mind whilst defending him less well than Shapps did.

A reminder that PM’s comments just now on lockdown/schools apply to England. The situation in Scotland is set out in thread below. We are making progress against this virus but to avoid a resurgence we must move carefully. And we must maintain trust in public health advice.

It is an unauthorised breech of lockdown that is a bit more worrying. Perhaps the might investigate this. You might want to interview to see what he knows of any incidents involving his senior staff.

EXCLUSIVE: Dominic Cummings reported to Durham Police over breaking lockdown rules. This story isn't going away any time soon.

Where is he off to? seems to think he can do as he pleases. The rest of us follow the rules, Cummings follows his instincts.

“[Cummings] was following instinct, the rest of us were following rules” may well be the epitaph of this rotten UK government. Well said

The Prime Minister has failed to answer a single question about what he knew, when, and where Mr Cummings was. Every day the Prime Minister allows this farce to continue the Tory government will lose more credibility and respect. He must show Mr Cummings the door without delay.

There is no question that Dominic Cummings broke the rules the minute he chose to drive to Durham. He is fatally undermining the public health message and must go. It is staggering that cannot see that - and calls into question his judgement and integrity.

In a desperate attempt to save Dominic Cummings, Boris Johnson has thrown public health advice and the sacrifice of millions to the wind. His refusal to act demeans his office and will cause lasting damage to public confidence in the Tory government and its response to Covid-19.

I’m afraid this is what millions of people across the UK will think after that disgraceful display of arrogance from . It cannot be one rule for the Tory government and another for the rest of us. Johnson is trying to take the public for fools - but it won’t wash.

"Boris Johnson's breathtaking arrogance sends out the message that there is one rule for the Tory government and another for the rest of us. "He is trying to take the public for fools" SNP Westminster Leader on Boris Johnson's press conference

A reminder - public health advice in Scotland comes from the Scottish Government - it is not what the Prime Minister is currently saying.

This is excruciating from he cannot defend the indefensible. should be gone. This refusal to accept to sack him brings the Prime Ministers judgement into question. must instigate an enquiry to get to the truth of any cover up by Govt.

“I think followed the instinct of every parent” Boris Johnson says. He deliberately misses the point. Across the country people didn’t follow their instinct to be with loved ones because they were told it was against the rules. One rule for us, another for them.

I hope Boris Johnson will come to the press conference and announce Dominic Cummings has finally done the decent thing and resigned - or been removed. If not, this will drag on and on, and seriously undermine public confidence in the Tory government and it’s Covid-19 response.

I know it is tough to lose a trusted adviser at the height of crisis, but when it’s a choice of that or integrity of vital public health advice, the latter must come first. That’s the judgment I and, to her credit, Catherine Calderwood reached. PM and Cummings should do likewise.

We already know Dominic Cummings broke multiple lockdown rules. There can’t be one rule for the Tory government and another for the rest of us. Any attempt to fob off questions and cling onto his adviser in this way would not be acceptable. It simply won’t wash.

There are suggestions is attempting to kick the issue into the long grass with an extended ‘investigation’. Let's be clear, that would be far too little too late at this stage. The only acceptable course of action now is to remove Dominic Cummings from his post.
